Dual Adjacency Matrix: Exploring Link Groups in Dense Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Node grouping is a common way of adding structure and information to networks that aids their interpretation. However, certain networks benefit from the grouping of links instead of nodes. Link communities, for example, are a form of link groups that describe high-quality overlapping node communities. There is a conceptual gap between node groups and link groups that poses an interesting visualization challenge. We introduce the Dual Adjacency Matrix to bridge this gap. This matrix combines node and link group techniques via a generalization that also enables it to be coordinated with a node-link-contour diagram. These methods have been implemented in a prototype that we evaluated with an information scientist and neuroscientist via interviews and prototype walkthroughs. We demonstrate this prototype with the analysis of a trade network and an fMRI correlation network.

Visualizing Dense Dynamic Networks with Matrix Cubes
Visualizing static networks is already difficult, but exploring dynamic networks is even more challenging due to the complexity of the tasks involved. Some require aggregation over time; others require observing the topology at one given time or tracking the evolution of edge weights. Due to this wide spectrum of tasks, one visual encoding will hardly fit all tasks effectively; multiple complem...
متن کاملMatLink: Enhanced Matrix Visualization for Analyzing Social Networks
Visualizing social networks presents challeges for both nodelink and adjacency matrix representations. Social networks are locally dense, which makes node-link displays unreadable. Yet, main analysis tasks require following paths, which is difficult on matrices. This article presents MatLink, a hybrid representation with links overlaid on the borders of a matrix and dynamic topological feedback...
متن کاملInferring Strange Behavior from Connectivity Pattern in Social Networks
Given a multimillion-node social network, how can we summarize connectivity pattern from the data, and how can we find unexpected user behavior? In this paper we study a complete graph from a large who-follows-whom network and spot lockstep behavior that large groups of followers connect to the same groups of followees. Our first contribution is that we study strange patterns on the adjacency m...
متن کاملSpectral Properties of Adjacency and Distance Matrices for Various Networks
The spectral properties of the adjacency (connectivity) and distance matrix for various types of networks: exponential, scale-free (Albert–Barabási) and classical random ones (Erdős–Rényi) are evaluated. The graph spectra for dense graph in the Erdős–Rényi model are derived analytically.
متن کاملExamining spectral space of complex networks with positive and negative links
Previous studies on social networks are often focused on networks with only positive relations between individual nodes. As a significant extension, we conduct the spectral analysis on graphs with both positive and negative edges. Specifically, we investigate the impacts of introducing negative edges and examine patterns in the spectral space of the graph’s adjacency matrix. Our theoretical res...
